We at Mr. Fridge Software think that global warming is one of the biggest threats the world ever had to face. It is undeniable that mankind is responsible for the climate change we are experiencing today.
Everyone has the responsibility to do as much as he can to reduce our CO2 emision dramatically, now, to limit the the rise in temperature over the next century to "only" two degrees (Celsius). This is not only a tree-hugging thing, since the 2006 Stern Review has shown that it is economically cheaper to act quickly, now, than to accepts the consequences.
Just like the bigger part of scientists we at Mr. Fridge Software are sure that we could easily half (or quarter if you live in the US) CO2 emission without losing any comfort or life quality just by increasing efficiency.
We guess most people would love to help the planet and by the way save money but they just don't. There may be many reasons why people are so reluctant to increase their energy efficence but we think most of you just need a little kick in the ass.
This is why all our Software-Licenses include a Green-License which means that if you want to use the Software you have to do something against Climate Change or Pollution. It is up to you what action you would like to take, but of course doing more good is better.
We hope this will motivate every single user to improve his Carbon-Footprint and actually we are idealistic enough to hope that this makes it a bit cooler to act ecological and economical. Maybe this will develop to some kind of sport where people compete with their neighbors over who is consuming less energy...
To provide a little guideline we have selected some very easy and cheap but very impacting ideas to make your life more green. And don't forget:
All these actions will reduce your Carbon Foot-Print and save you money, too. It is not only about doing nice things for the planet - this is real hard core capitalism. Energy efficiency makes you richer!
Replace a conventional light bulb with an engergy efficient CFL-bulb
While the purchase price of an CFL is typically 3 to 10 times greater than that of an equivalent incandescent lamp, the extended lifetime and lower energy use will more than compensate for the higher initial cost. A US-News article stated "A household that invested $90 (€70) in changing 30 fixtures to CFLs would save $440 (€330) to $1,500 (€1,100) over the five-year life of the bulbs, depending on your cost of electricity."
Of course you will also reduce your CO2 emision caused by lighting by 80%.
If you replace one 100W incandescent lamp with a 20W CFL you get the same light but will save about €15 ($20) per year. This will payback the price of a €5 ($6.50) software product within 4 months.
Turn off the light when you leave the room
Hey that's very easy! And it is really not true that turning lights on and off frequently will shorten bulb lifetime. That was 20 years ago! And a CFL will not use more energy when turned on than when burning 5 minutes. Turning on a CFL needs as much energy as having it burning for 2 Seconds!
Go to work or shopping by bike
We can't tell you how much money you can save by not using your car, because car usage and fuel prices are very different locally. But we can promise that you will feel much fitter and healthier when you use your bike for a short tour every day.
But as soon as you have gone 50 km (30 miles) by bike instead of your car you will have saved at least €5 ($7) in fuel costs and - surprise - that's the price of one of our great software products!
Turn your computer off or put it to sleep when you leave your office.
If you have a notebook you probably already have your energy settings set very energy saving so your battery lifetime will be longer. If you are using a desktop computer you not have cared much about these put-to-sleep-settings. But did you know that a normal 20" iMac uses 200W when running? If you put it to sleep it will only need about 15W. That means that if you change your energy setting so that it will be in sleep for 1 hour every day in stead of running full power (for example in your lunch break) you will save about 300 hours per year. That is 300*185W = 55 500 Wh and that equals 11 Euros ($15) per year.
Actually that is not very much but you save money without losing any comfort. Your mac will awake from sleep within 10 seconds. And you will have saved the cost of a €5 ($7) software product within 6 months!
Of course turning off your Computer over night will save you a lot of money, too.
To change your energy settings: Go to your System Preferences > Energy Settings and set display sleep to max of 5 Minutes. Set Computer sleep to a max of 15 Minutes.
Turn off your ScreenSaver because naturally it will be running when you are away so you never see it. Yet a ScreenSaver uses a lot of CPU power for animation which causes your Computer to need much more power.
Oh, and it really does not hurt your Mac to be waken up more often from sleep. There's nothing that will be damaged.

Be creative!
These are only a few easy examples. Be creative and remember:
Each little action - how small it may be - is a step in the right direction.
